See You at the Pole is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event. A global day of student prayer, See you at the Pole began in 1990 as a grassroots movement with ten students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September. See You at the Pole is simply a prayer rally where students meet at the school flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God.

“See You at the Pole is one of my favorite events each year because it allows me to watch students lead a time of worship and share their heart about God,” adult leader Rebecca Dominy said. “Seeing students come together for the singular purpose of praying for our school, the student body, and staff will always move me.”

See You at the Pole provides a space other than church for Christian students to express their faith, which is something that can be difficult in the United States where school led religious activity is generally prohibited. Senior Leah Bernal is one of the many students who has helped lead worship and has spoken at See You at the Pole for the past three years.

“We really aren’t allowed to express our faith in school, although Texas and our community is more lenient because we have a lot of believers,” Bernal said. “I think it’s really important because its a day, nationwide, where Christian students can come together and worship freely.”

See You at the Pole provides an opportunity for students who would otherwise not know each other to meet and interact. Senior Grace Gutierrez was one of the students who helped lead See You at the Pole and shared one of her favorite verses.

“It gave me a chance to share my faith with my fellow students,” Gutierrez said. “I got to show them that I am a strong believer in Christ.”

See You at the Pole encourages unity among the students and allows them to interact in a safe worship space and to interact with like-minded students and staff who are united under the pole.

“There’s just something about seeing students gathered for a singular, united purpose,” Dominy said. “Watching the sun rise as students take a stand for what they believe in gives me hope that each one of them will have a positive impact on the world.”

See You at the Pole not only strengthens the students’ faith, but it also strengthens their friendships.

“I think it’s helped me feel more comfortable being able to express my faith in school,” Bernal said. “I may not be preaching the gospel to everyone at my school everyday, but it’s comforting to know that I can love on everyone and show them Jesus’ love through me.”

See You at the Pole is one of the many events throughout the year that allow students to come together and bond. It has helped strengthen students’ friendships and, above all, their faith. 

“Stepping out and taking a stand for what you believe in can be difficult at any age,” Dominy said, “but each of the students who spoke Wednesday morning did so with grace and dignity so that, as students were dropped off by parents in the circle drive, others were able to see the willingness students have to pray for one another.”
