As the Viking-Tiger rivalry reaches its peak, there’s no doubt that the Crosstown Showdown against A&M Consolidated is this week. In support and spirit of the big game, Student Council hosts an annual tailgate party outside of Kyle Field from 5:00-7:00.
“We tailgate as a way to celebrate that we are there for the game,” Student Council sponsor Cyndi Owens said. “It’s also the only major fundraiser that Student Council has.”
An event this big requires definite planning and organization. Student Council members make sure everything is in order and get the word out to students, staff and community members.
“I’m getting the word out,” Student Council Historian Amanda Rickee said. “You may hear something about it on Candy 95.1 and posters will be hung around the school.”
For the tailgate, the Student Council collaborates with local businesses to supply food, drink and advertising.
“Outback provides hamburgers and Chicken Express supplies sweet tea. We’ll also have PALS members out there to help along side, Spoons, and Candy 95.1,” Student Council Vice President Hailey Smith said. “It should be a great time.”
Although the tailgate serves as a way to encourage spirit amongst the Vikings, the event is also a principal fundraiser for the Student Council.
“All this planning is worth it; this is how we get a majority of our money,” Student Council Secretary Tabitha Hernandez said. “Last year was great; we were just about able to cover our expenses for the entire year with the Tailgate.”
Tickets will be sold for $6.00 each at the door and through student council members.
“I’m excited to see a lot of people,” Rickee said. “Many alumni come back and it’s great seeing them and it gives the freshman a chance to interact and get into Viking tradition. It’s great food, good atmosphere, and just an overall good time for everyone involved.”
