What to do about life after high school is a daunting question for most students. Luckily, there is a place for the questions, about life post-graduation, to be answered. The GO Center is a place for students to plan for college and career fields that they may be interested in pursuing. They provide support for students by assisting in filling out college applications and financial aid forms.
Signing up for college entrance exams and applying for scholarships are some of the other things students can get help with in the GO Center. GO Center coordinator Deborah Kerr helps students obtain financial aid, find information on specific colleges and even helps make sure they complete their current assignments to ensure they walk the stage in May.
“I issue test fee waivers to students who qualify,” Kerr said. “Many students come in the GO Center and ask for tutoring or simply print off a class assignment.”
While the GO Center has help for high school classes, it also provides help for the future.
“The GO Center gives students a place to go to ask important questions before they graduate so they can get a plan early on,” Kerr said. “They can find out what careers interest them and what type of education they would need to reach that goal.”
Students are able to use computers in the GO Center before and after school or during lunch. They can also compare colleges, fill out applications, sign up for college entrance test, apply for financial aid and scholarships. Students can also visit colleges and go to conferences that introduce them to the college life through the resources found in the Go Center.
“I work with the Academic Advisers occasionally to coordinate a trip to a college,” Kerr said. “This year we took students to A&M for the MEDALS conference, and we will most likely take a group to Blinn Brenham.”
Maximizing Educational Development through Academic and Leadership Skills (MEDALS) is a two day program at Texas A&M where students are placed into groups of high school students with two current college students. They discussed topics such as the transition to college life, higher education opportunities and the college admission process.
“Peer groups allowed participants time to discuss the college admission process and gain insight into the transition from high school to college,” Kerr said. “The students had the opportunity to interact with other high school students from all over the state of Texas.”
If any students would like help with college information they can find it in the GO Center located in the Blue Commons area in room 5196.
