For students, the junior and senior years are vital in starting to look at college they would like to attend in the future and applying to such colleges. Studying and working hard is something everyone has to do to get that desired score on their ACT and SAT exam.
Dean of Instruction Mrs. Willet helps coordinate testing for students.
“The SAT test does a writing components, a verbal component, and a math component,” Willet said. “The ACT tests reading, writing which is optional, math, science and has a verbal component.”
For many schools the your score on the SAT test can determine whether or not you meet college admissions standards.
“The tests are a required part of the admissions process,” Willet said. “Colleges use a sliding scale, your score on your SAT or ACT, your GPA , and your class rank. All of this determines whether or not you meet the admissions standards for the college you desire to attend.”
Practice tests help give students an expectation of what scores they will make on the exams.
“Anything above a 1000 on the SAT which is including the verbal and the math components will put you at above 50 percent of all the other students taking the test,” Willet said. “The ACT scores average something around the same thing, with a 20 to 24 which will put you somewhere right at 50 percent. I suggest students go and look up on the college board website to see what other information they might needs on scores.”
For juniors Blaine Brezina and Rose Barrentine studying for the SAT test payed off.
“To study for the test I got a book, it’s like this underground guide to the SAT,” Brezina said. “It was really helpful. It’s got a whole list of vocabulary words that are really helpful and a bunch of strategie,”
Junior Rose Barrentine attended a PSAT class to prepare for the test. Which went over questions and basic math skills to prepare you for the real thing.
If students need any other information about the ACT and SAT tests, they can visit the Go Center where you will have access to all the information needed about college admissions as well as the ACT and SAT tests.
In preparation for the SAT test students can take the PSAT. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The PSAT is a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning.
