The neon leg warmers, baggy sweatshirts, and wild poofy hair will remain safely tucked away deep in closets across America because, even though the 80’s are making a comeback, it’s thankfully not with fashion. Instead it’s with wildly fun and entertaining movies, television shows, and cartoons. Personally, this change in movies and TV shows is a relief to me because I’ve had enough of pointless current television shows (though Doctor Who is just fantastic, but an argument can be made that it too lived through the 80’s).
Yes, I am aware that most of the people reading this were not born in the 70s and raised in the 80’s, but many have at least heard their parents talk about a few nostalgic classic cartoons or television shows, or have hopefully even watched a few reruns.
In 1984 a colorful cartoon entitled Rainbow Brite was created for young girls. A girl named Wisp, whose name later changes to Rainbow Brite due to plot progression, restores color to the land by defeating the King of Shadows. Rainbow Brite is making its cartoon renewal to our lovely modern screens soon with Emily Osment as the voice of Wisp/Rainbow Brite. But Rainbow Brite isn’t the only small screen hit getting a make-over. Remember Full House? With its original stellar cast, the plan is to reboot the show. Awesome right? John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse, is fully supporting the reboot and hopes to be joined by the same original cast. Full details haven’t been released but who knows, maybe Kimmy will end up being a Fashion Designer like she dreamed.
Now, on to the big screen; Molly Ringwald should not be rebooted and, lets face it, Molly is in most of the movies from the 80’s. Seriously, what worthwhile movie from the 80’s is there that Molly Ringwald wasn’t in? Okay, besides The Karate Kid movies and The Outsiders which both have Ralph Macchio. Nonetheless, I am in favor of not remaking The Breakfast Club, Back To The Future, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Ghostbusters, and Gremlins. These classic tales of friends and their fantastic adventures in Saturday detention; a time traveling school student and his old friend; a poor girl making her own clothes and getting the guy; a trio of men defeating ghosts that are taking over their city; a sixteen year old with her dream guy; and a fur ball who should not be fed after midnight, should not be renewed because of how timeless they are and how poorly it might end up. It’s too late for Footloose, The Karate Kid, and The Goonies.
Footloose was revived a couple of years ago with the same plot, and accurate casting was decent as far as remakes go. The Karate Kid as some of you may remember also got it’s reboot in 2010, though everything about it was different from the original The Karate Kid in 1984. Character names and setting are completely different, leaving only the title to make it seem like the 2010 Karate Kid movie was like the 1984 version, making it just a bit less tolerable. Though rumour has it that The Goonies will never say die! Steven Spielberg is coming up with ideas for the new plot that will include previous cast members. I’m not worried about this movie and how the actors aren’t 14 anymore but, I’m worried about whether Sean Astin is in it or not! Some may know him as the young boy Mikey from The Goonies, though in the next Goonies movie he may just end up being a grown man with a few kids and a wife. Perhaps Data, Mouth, Mikey, Chump, Andy, Brand, and Stef’s kids will end up finding their parents map and go on their own adventure. In my opinion, that would be a great movie to watch!
Although you may not be so interested in the 80’s and it’s reboots, what would you think about reboots of your favorite TV shows, movies, and cartoons in 20 to 30 years from now? Maybe you will have your own children by then, and perhaps the theme song of The Powerpuff Girls will start to play in the living room, or possibly Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Wouldn’t you want your kids to experience those memorable parts of your childhood? Wouldn’t you want to bring back some of your favorite old tv shows, movies, and cartoons?
