The Viking boys golf team placed sixth at the state tournment after weather hampered the second day of play.

After the first round of play the boys found themselves in second place with a 305, but the second day proved more difficult.

“Going into the second day, the wind picked up and the weather conditions started getting a little worse,” senior Dylan Godfrey said. “[Because of the delays] we were putting in the dark and it was tough to see. It was a long round and we were happy to get it over with.”

For golf coach Ronald Newhouse, the effort of team meant more to him than scores alone.

“Some unfortunate circumstances led to higher scores in the second round, and even though the boys were extremely disappointed with a sixth place finish, I applaud them for what they accomplished,” Newhouse said. “Sixth was less than we were capable of, but as I always tell the players, you can not control whether you win or lose in golf, because you can not control outside circumstances or how well your opponents play. All you can do is give your best effort on any particular day and I felt like we did that. So, for me, there is a lot more satisfaction than disappointment.”

Senior Cameron Carver finished first on the team through the two day tournament by shooting a 75-78.

“It feels good [to have helped the team win],” Carver said. “It feels good to be able to make a positive impact on the team that I really enjoyed playing with them this year.”

This trip to Austin was also significant because it marked Bryan High’s first trip to state and also coach Newhouse’s last year as coach.

“It feels good to be the first golf team to go to state for Bryan High,” Carver said. “It let us know we accomplished something and all the hard work we put in this year finally paid off.”

As school begins to wind down, the members of the team reflected on their time together.

“The end of our season was a whirlwind with five tournaments in six weeks,” Newhouse said. “We improved each week with an impressive run of scores, including the first round of the state tournament.”

For all involved, this year’s season will be one to remember.

“It has been a challenging yet extremely rewarding 36 years as Bryan High School’s golf coach,” Newhouse said. “The six week run to the state tournament will definitely rank as one of my most enjoyable experiences.”
