Society is full of cruelty and negativity, something as simple as a rock could change the way people perceive themselves, others, and the world around them. Inspiration can be found in places of little importance and can dramatically affect a person’s outlook on life. Around the Brazos Valley, a group of people are using rocks to spread a message of positivity and generosity towards one another.
“I saw the story on the news,” history teacher Tim Bailey said. ”I saw that people were hiding the rocks for people to find and trying to get families together to do something that is fun, while passing on an inspirational message or art to someone.”
Hiding and finding decorated rocks has given community members a chance to connect with each other by posting about their experiences on social media.
“We did not go around purposefully looking for the rocks, but I have noticed on a Facebook group that others do go on rock hunts,” French teacher Tara Bailey said. “We just happened to find ours. I believe it is a great way to spread love and positivity and also get to know your community.”
Painting rocks is not only a way to get the community involved, but it is also a fun activity for families to spend quality time together.
“I think it really helps to bring families together through a creative outlet,” senior Elizabeth Olivarez said. “It’s cool to make a game out of searching for the rocks.”
Instead of just painting a new rock, some people place the rocks they find in other parts of town so others can see the message they saw and the purpose of the project can continue to make a domino effect to others.
“Rather than making a new rock, we took the one we found and placed it by St. Joseph Hospital,” sophomore Estelle DeSilva said. “It can always make somebody’s day and it’s funny walking around and seeing the rocks spread around town.”
This project has emphasized that monetary value doesn’t put a price on positivity and happiness.
“It doesn’t cost anything,” Mr. Bailey said. “It is neat to find a rock no one else has found yet.”
Designing a rock for others has allowed people to feel engaged in an activity that may help someone around them and have a big impact with little effort.
“We have already painted rocks twice since finding ours and plan to paint more,” Mrs. Bailey said. “I think the group is trying to spread positivity and well wishes through inspirational notes to brighten someone’s day.”
Families are using this project as a way to teach their children about spreading positive thoughts and feelings to others.
“I think it is a great message to spread,” Mrs. Bailey said. “We were excited to find it so we could show our daughter, and she was happy to paint her own rock to spread the love. The rocks have a chain effect and any extra positivity in your day can go a long way.”
