Academic UIL attends first meet

Over the weekend, the Academic UIL students attended their first meet of the year at the Belton Invitational. The Journalism, Current Issues & Events and Computer Science teams each came away with first-place titles.

For the Feature Writing event, sophomore Emily Nash won 1st place while senior Stephani Whisenant placed 2nd and sophomore Eva Araujo took 4th. In News Writing, Nash placed 4th and senior John Fuller took 6th. In Editorial Writing, Fuller claimed 3rd place and sophomore Andrea Mendes placed 6th. For the Headline Writing competition, Whisenant placed 1st and Nash 2nd.

In the written Computer Science event, senior TJ Harvey won 1st place. The Computer Science Hands-On Team, which won first place, consisted of Harvey, sophomore Terry Polsgrove and junior Jenna Williams.

Fuller won first place in the Current Issues event.

In the Social Studies event, sophomore Jessica Dill took 3rd and sophomore Jasleen Dhilion placed 4th.

Junior Rowan Martion placed second in Spelling.

With the Computer Applications event, junior Noel Tate placed 2nd and Williams 3rd.

In Accounting, junior Kelsey Gilley placed 3rd, junior Brian Taylor 4th, sophomore Sheerah Williams 5th, and junior Kevin Taylor 6th.

The Journalism Team also competed in the MRC Journalism Invitational. At this competition, for Feature Writing, Nash placed 1st, Fuller 2nd and junior Emma Raleigh 4th. In News Writing, Raleigh placed 1st, Fuller 3rd and freshman Jesse Baxter took 6th. In Editorial Writing, Baxter placed 1st and Fuller took 6th.
