Lady Vikes softball moves into first place in district

The softball team is now in sole possession of first place after Tuesday’s victory over Killeen Ellison, 4-2.

The Lady Vikings scored a run in the second when junior Taylor Canales singled in sophomore Taylor Curtis for the 1-0 lead. The Ellison Lady Eagles took their only lead of the game in the bottom of the 2nd with a pair of runs.

The girls battled back in the top of the third when senior Meagan Kraatz got on base because of an error by the shortstop. Kraatz would advanced to 2nd on a blown pick-off at first, stole 3rd and then raced home after the Lady Eagle’s catcher threw the ball wide to third base. Sophomore Erica Russell walked and advanced to third on the throw attempt for Kraatz. Junior Reagan Boenker grounded out to the short stop, but Russell raced in to score and give the Lady Vikes a 3-2 lead.

In the 6th, Boenker lead off with a walk. Senior Hannah Parker sacrificed Boenker to 2nd, but because Ellison failed to cover 3rd Boenker turned the play into two bases. Curtis ground out to first, but the play allowed Boenker to add an insurance run to the scoreboard.

The two run lead would be enough for Parker as she struck out 9 and improved to 11-1 on the year.\

The Lady Vikings are now 21-4 and 8-1 in district play. They will host Copperas Cove on Thursday, April 5 at 7pm at the Lady Viking Softball Complex.
