Giving back offers dual benefits

As we approach the holiday season, we begin to see widespread food drives and donation stands run by the Salvation Army and other organizations to give people the opportunity to donate to the less fortunate in the community.

Giving back is an important way of supporting the community. Charity not only makes the giver feel better about themselves, but it also makes a much larger impact on the people in need who are receiving donations.

Whether you give gifts for families who can’t afford to buy presents for Christmas or food for those with the most urgent need, those without appreciate any assistance from their community.

While it’s always good to give to those in need during the holiday season, many seem to forget that giving isn’t restricted to one time of the year. Many organizations like the Brazos Valley Food Bank and the American Red Cross run fundraisers year round.

Donating to organizations that are run nation wide, and even world wide is another option, such as Habitat for Humanity and Samaritan’s Purse are both organizations.

Even for those who can’t donate by giving money or other means, offering services by promoting and volunteering helps just as much as giving monetary donations.

Volunteering at shelters like Scotty’s Home or serving meals at Soup Kitchen’s are good ways of giving to the community.

Even performing random acts of kindness to strangers by giving a smile, opening a door, or just making their day a little brighter through kindness can greatly impact a person.

Many in need, however, feel as though donations are a hand out and are reluctant to accept the helping hand that comes from the community.

Fundraisers are implemented to help those who are not able to afford food for their families or other needs as a means to lend a hand up instead of a hand out.

Giving to those who are under financial stress and simply cannot provide for their families is meaningful because who knows where you will be in the future.
