From house to home: Fixer Upper features family friendly fun

“Are you ready to see your Fixer Upper?” star of the HGTV series, Fixer Upper, Joanna Gaines says before revealing to her clients something that will change their lives forever- their dream home. Joanna and her husband, Chip Gaines, carefully select the worst houses in the best neighborhoods of Waco, and surrounding areas to transform them into their clients desires. The show is an adventure filled with style, family, and fun.

Each house starts as a run down shack with problems along the way. However, within a matter of weeks, Chip and Joanna are able to completely transform the house into a home. There are certain things each episode has to contain in order to be complete; Chip annoying and joking with Joanna, a kitchen island, french doors, and at least one wall knocked completely out. Viewers also get to see the adorable Gaines children who make an appearance to bring Joanna dinner while she finishes decorating the house.

Despite the house being the “worst one on the block”, the Gaines always work together to make it great. Chip is in charge of “demo day” when they clean up the house and yard to get ready for the redesigning. Joanna is the queen of interior design and always comes up with a brilliant idea for each family.

Chip and Joanna didn’t stop with the production of the show. They have turned Waco into a tourist stop in the state of Texas with Magnolia Silos. Magnolia has a shop, a bakery, and a big lawn with games and food trucks, making it fit for any family road trip There are a bunch of people who can’t drive through Waco without stopping. The Gaines also released a book, The Magnolia Story, about how they got started and their experience on Fixer Upper.

Many people have tried to figure out how a couple of small town folks in Waco can create a show that has been such a hit. People have made jokes about the Gaines family because of their exaggerated slang and poor language, but Chip and Joanna don’t let this bring them down and they actually laugh about it. This has strengthened them and their show because nothing can tear them down.

Out of all the amazing shows on HGTV, Fixer Upper is easily my favorite because of the fun and wholesome people featured as well as the incredible house designs. Chip and Joanna are authentic, relatable, and likable. I would recommend this show to anyone whether they like home building shows or not, because it’s so much more than that. It’s a good look at a happy family that includes a little humor. “Are you brave enough to take on a Fixer Upper?”
