Freshman places third at state tennis tournament

On May 13 and 14, freshman Jacy Smith competed in the state tennis tournament at Texas A&M. After rain delay on May 13, and rounds being pushed into May 14, Jacy placed third overall. Following her year’s accomplishments, Jacy and her coach anticipate her goals for next year. With support from her parents and coaches, Jacy will set the bar higher for the following seasons.

Freshman earns first at tournament

The spring tennis season continued this weekend with the Tiger Classic. Freshman Jacy Smith earned first place in the A girl’s single division. Seniors Dillon Murphy and Michal Basa finished third in the boy’s doubles division. Sophomore Lexie Rieger placed fourth in the B girl’s singles division.

For the love of the game: Nationally ranked freshman demonstrates leadership on team

Everyone has hobbies; something they like to do every once in a while or daily. Every once in a while, someone finds a hobby or activity which fits them perfectly and they fall in love with it from the start. Freshman Jacy Smith found tennis years ago and has been playing ever since.
“Since [Jacy] was about two years old she would drag a racket around the room and play with a balloon,” Jacy’s mother, Jaime Smith, said. “She played in her first competitive tournament was when she was about six.”

Tennis team advances to area playoffs

The Varsity tennis team defeated Livingston in the first district match of the season 17-2. The Vikings finished doubles 6-1 and went 11-1 in singles. Senior Tanner Toomer and freshman Jacy Smith also earned a win in mixed doubles.

Viking tennis team goes 3-1 at tournament

The Viking tennis team went 3-1 in the Consol Tournament this weekend. Bryan defeated College Station HS, Copperas Cove and Rudder. The only loss came at the hands of Woodlands JV. The team returns to the courts Tuesday against Conroe HS. The Crosstown Showdown will take place at Consol on Friday afternoon.

Mixed doubles team advances to region

Senior Jacob Preston and junior Christine Ehresman qualified for the Region tournament by placing 2nd mixed doubles during the District tournament last week. They defeated Belton in a playback match.

To some, tennis is just a hobby or a sport, played just to exercise. But that’s not the case for one particular senior mixed-doubles tennis player.

As players continue to volley back and forth at a rapid pace, there’s not a lot of down time during a tennis match. Competitors must stay on their toes in a sport where reaction and anticipation mean everything.

Tennis also provides an opportunity for students to have a release from the average school day by allowing them to step onto the court and channel their energy elsewhere.
