There’s a social stigma around the number 100 that makes it so substantial. Turning 100 years old, scoring 100 points on a test, publishing 100 issues of a comic. The number 100 is something people strive for around the world. On September 14, senior Caroline McCall not only surpassed 100 wins in her high school tennis career, but set a new record for Bryan High.

On May 13 and 14, freshman Jacy Smith competed in the state tennis tournament at Texas A&M. After rain delay on May 13, and rounds being pushed into May 14, Jacy placed third overall. Following her year’s accomplishments, Jacy and her coach anticipate her goals for next year. With support from her parents and coaches, Jacy will set the bar higher for the following seasons.

Everyone has hobbies; something they like to do every once in a while or daily. Every once in a while, someone finds a hobby or activity which fits them perfectly and they fall in love with it from the start. Freshman Jacy Smith found tennis years ago and has been playing ever since.
“Since [Jacy] was about two years old she would drag a racket around the room and play with a balloon,” Jacy’s mother, Jaime Smith, said. “She played in her first competitive tournament was when she was about six.”

The Viking tennis team went 3-1 in the Consol Tournament this weekend. Bryan defeated College Station HS, Copperas Cove and Rudder. The only loss came at the hands of Woodlands JV. The team returns to the courts Tuesday against Conroe HS. The Crosstown Showdown will take place at Consol on Friday afternoon.

As players continue to volley back and forth at a rapid pace, there’s not a lot of down time during a tennis match. Competitors must stay on their toes in a sport where reaction and anticipation mean everything.
Tennis also provides an opportunity for students to have a release from the average school day by allowing them to step onto the court and channel their energy elsewhere.
