After a TV show’s finale premiers, the show tends to surge in popularity and then soon be forgotten. Occasionally though, a gem among the other crappy Netflix originals is found which puts viewers in an autumnal mood. Gilmore Girls is a show that can be easily lived and admired, and I think that’s one of the reasons I love it. It’s not too serious and most of the lines in the show are said in a sarcastic tone. References about old movies and songs are made and classics are brought up out of nowhere. It’s a comfortable show to watch. It’s the type of show that viewers can watch without thinking too much. I don’t have to seriously analyze what is going on, I can just sit back and chill.
In the show there are three main characters: Lorelai, Rory, and Luke. Lorelai had Rory, her daughter, when she was sixteen and throughout the show it follows her as a single mother. Despite coming from a wealthy family, Lorelai starts her new life with nothing, zilch, nada. She did it on her own and, as a daughter of a single mother, I can relate to that. My story is similar, well…not the money, but I will always admire a single mother earning a living, raising a kid, and eventually getting her degree and creating her own business.
Rory is smart and definitely doesn’t depict an average teen. I think it’s because of the lack of technology, but her character is the type that wouldn’t have tech distractions anyway. Rory has been loved and cherished by her small community and that has a lot to do with the fact that her mother is single and that she’s a good kid.
Luke spends most of his adult life pining after Lorelai and has been hurt by other women in the past. He is the owner of Luke’s Diner which seems to be the only coffee shops within a 20 mile radius of Lorelai. How convenient. He watches out for her and builds a chuppah for her future wedding. (You’ll have to watch to understand).
The actors that portray the characters in the show Gilmore Girls were a great choice by the directors. I couldn’t have picked better people to portray Lorelai and Rory. I definitely think that the boyfriend choices for Rory were a good selection and each came at a good part in her life. As for Lorelai’s boyfriends/fíances, I feel like she could have skipped Max. He loved her but you could tell her mind wasn’t in it and it was really disappointing that she chose Rory’s dad, Christopher over Max. Both of them were trash. Luke is better hands down.
I am not being dramatic when I say that Gilmore Girls is the reason why I drink 5 cups of coffee a day. Since watching Gilmore Girls for the first time in 2016, I drink dangerous amounts of coffee each day. But wait…let me explain….In order for me to be like Lorelai Gilmore, I have to get on her level. Not only have I memorized more movie references, watched Casablanca, (and loved it,) I have also discovered my love of coffee because of Gilmore Girls.
Gilmore Girls is a lot of things, but bad isn’t one of them. I suggest watching it. Get invested, be involved, be a part of the show. It’s an obsession I live with, along with my coffee addiction.
