With COVID-19 keeping us more confined to our homes than we have been in the past, many of us are looking for something new to watch. The huge library of movies and shows Disney+ offers is a great way for subscribers to pass the time while enjoying classic Disney movies or the hottest new shows on Disney+.
Disney+ is a movie and TV streaming service that Disney launched in 2019, giving users a way to stream hundreds of classic movies as well as new releases such as The Mandalorian. Disney+ has amassed over 50 million subscribers, partly due to their wide reach of fans from franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and their original classics.
One of the key factors separating Disney+ from other streaming services is the fact that Disney already had a wide array of original movies long before the service was released in 2019. There are many classic Disney movies that are difficult to find, and Disney+ gives fans access to almost all of Disney’s content in one place.
Other television networks have exclusive streaming services and shows, but services like HBO and NBC do not bring in the appeal that Disney carries. While those networks may have fans of shows or films, they usually do not have fans from all ages for hundreds of shows like Disney has.
Disney’s pricing is also much more affordable than other services, such as Netflix. While Netflix’s fully unlimited costs $14.99 per month, subscribers can get Disney+ for just $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. Subscribers can also get Hulu and ESPN+ included for a total price of $12.99 per month, which is still cheaper than Netflix’s cost for a single platform.
Unlike Apple’s new streaming service, Disney+ isn’t just another streaming service that serves no purpose. Years of Disney marketing has led to public-wide interest in their streaming service as classics have rotated in and out of the Disney vault for years creating an artificial supply and demand with movie lovers.
Disney has taken in a huge fan base over the years, from older films such as Aladdin (1992), Bambi (1942) and The Lion King (1994) to newer films including Pixar movies and live action remakes like Mulan (2020).
Not only is Disney+ great for consumers, it’s also great for parents. On Disney+, younger kids can be exposed to the classic Disney movies that they might not otherwise watch.
As a Star Wars fan (you had to see this coming, right?), I will always love Disney+ because in a way, Disney+ revived Star Wars after the massive flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Disney+’s new series, The Mandalorian, nicknamed “Mando” by fans, not only attracted fans to subscribe to the service, but also brought a grittier aspect of Star Wars.
Disney+ may not be ground breaking, but the wise reach Disney has amassed over the years has helped Disney+ become a success. Since Disney+ has done so well, Disney has invested into more shows and films for their service. I’m excited to see what Disney has in store next.
