Senior varsity quarterback Boone Turner has verbally committed to switching positions and playing tight end for Lamar University in the fall. After spending his high school years as a quarterback, Boone is ready to try something new and believes his size and versatility will serve him well as a tight end. At 6’4” and 220 lbs., Boone looks the part of a tight end and is quick on his feet from all the footwork he has done as a quarterback.
“My heart isn’t really at quarterback, so the prospect of changing positions is relieving,” Boone said. “I am also glad to be done with the recruiting process and all the stress that includes.”
Boone is looking to take the next step in continuing his educational and athletic career while evaluating the opportunities available to him.
“Right now, Lamar’s offer is the most appealing I have had, and on top of that, I already have a good relationship with the coaches,” Boone said. “Lamar’s campus is beautiful, and I love it there because the environment is nice.”
On the field, Boone’s favorite receiver this season has been Terrance Lewis, who recognizes the significance of their bond in producing positive yardage and points for the Vikings.
“The relationship between a quarterback and wide receiver is really important,” Terrance said. “I think it’s the most important relationship you need on the team because that’s where the big plays come in and where a team can shake the defense.”
Terrance sees Boone’s understanding of the game as key to the Viking’s success this year. He believes Boone will excel as a tight end and be an asset to Lamar.
“Our relationship on the field is different because Boone’s bigger than you expect a quarterback to be,” Terrence said. “I think Boone will be able to transition to tight end because he understands the game from a quarterback’s perspective and can use that to his advantage.”
Senior wide receiver Eli Bachmeyer appreciates how Boone approaches the game and how he can make hard work fun.
“Boone is a leader; he always hypes us up,” Eli said. “He playfully prepares for games and gets us ready to practice every morning, helping things not get too serious while also putting in the work to make us successful as a team.”
Quarterback coach Cody Wilson also appreciates Boone’s kid-at-heart mentality since he is still dedicated, hard-working, and competitive.
“Boone is the goofiest kid,” Wilson said. “We can make a lot of jokes with each other, and he’s a fun kid to coach, which keeps things light-hearted while putting in the major work to improve without getting burnt out.”
Wilson believes Boone will bring significant assets to a collegiate team like Lamar, and his skills as a quarterback will serve him well in the transition to tight end.
“He’s a good kid and a hard worker,” Wilson said. “Athletically, Boone can play multiple positions. If he goes to Lamar and plays tight end, his versatility will benefit the team because he knows what the quarterback’s looking for and has a head start on that part of the offense.”
Boone knows that the new position will take some time, but he is committed to doing whatever it takes to be successful each step of the way.
“All you have to do is practice, and it makes perfect, so I really just need to practice getting better,” Boone said. “I’m excited for my senior year as a Viking and looking forward to the next chapter at Lamar.”
