Mastering the ability to balance commitment to a team, along with remaining dedicated to school is something many of us see as nearly impossible. One student, senior Khadijah Brisby, manages to execute the two seamlessly.
Brisby has been playing basketball for 6 years and can be seen leading the team on the court.
“She’s very tough, hard-nosed, aggressive, very quick and athletic,” basketball coach Beth Jesurun said. “She works well with others, she’s a good teammate, a great leader, and she does a really good job.”
A positive attitude and desire to do her best is regularly seen in Brisby, benefiting not only herself, but also her teammates.
“She’s really fast, she makes you want to do your best. Her shots are on point, no matter where she is on the court, she makes it,” freshman JV basketball player Jordan Rhodes said. “Seeing that makes you want to be that person, and be on varsity. With her being a senior, and it being her last year, I strive to fill her shoes when she leaves.”
Well-known for her abilities on the basketball court, Brisby also excels in the classroom, and devotes enough time and energy into her schoolwork.
“I take out time. When we have our breaks in basketball, I do homework,” Brisby said. “When I go home there’s no procrastinating, I do my homework immediately.”
English teacher Beth Pennebaker notices the good work ethic and time Brisby puts into doing well in class everyday.
“She’s a wonderful student, very enthusiastic, and always does her work, she’s a leader in the classroom,” Pennebaker said. “She’s very cooperative, friendly and outgoing, but always behaves appropriately.”
For most of us, keeping up with our grades is a daunting task in itself, with the added stress of basketball practice, Brisby has managed to find the balance.
“It’s somewhat difficult, but not that difficult,” Brisby said. “If you’re really determined and motivated in succeeding then it shouldn’t be that terrible.”
Basketball has pushed Brisby to reach her fullest potential, and learn valuable lessons that she’ll keep with her through college and the rest of her life.
“It has shown me how to strive for the things I want, never give up, and be responsible,” Brisby said. “I don’t think I’d be as determined as I am today in school and in life if it wasn’t for basketball.”
