Volleyball is a very active sport and consumes most your day. For Senior Jessica Pfeffer she has found a way to excel both on the court and in the classroom.

Since she was in the 7th grade, Pfeffer could be found on the court practicing volleyball which has taught her valuable skills.

“It has taught me a good work ethic and time management skills that help me not only in volleyball, but academically,” Pfeffer said.

Pfeffer has come a long way since she began playing varsity volleyball her freshman year.

“When she started off as a freshman on varsity, she always wanted please her teammates and coaches,” head volleyball coach Caroline Simpson said. “This year she has fallen into being a real leader, and as captain of the team, all the other girls respect her very much.”

Pfeffer’s teammates look up to her for her skills on the court and her dedication to the team.

“She’s a great leader. She always has a positive attitude even if we’re not having such a great night,” teammate Courtney Sager said. “Every game she gives 100%.”

Sager said she has been on the varsity team for four years and has enjoyed every moment.

“It’s bittersweet that this will be the last year I’ll get to play with such a great athlete,” Sager said.

Volleyball has not only taught her athletic skills, but also has given Pfeffer memories that will always be with her, even when she leaves high school.

“My most memorable moment would have to be when we beat Rudder my junior year,” Pfeffer said. “We had a huge crowd at the game which made it very energetic.”

On a more personal note, an unforgettable memory was when her coach overcame cancer.

“The fact that she had cancer definitely changed the team, but for the better,” Pfeffer said. “We just had this drive to do well for her and that didn’t mean we would necessarily win, but that we wouldn’t give up. If she could push through cancer we could push through the hardest games against the hardest opponents.”

In addition to playing for Bryan High, Pfeffer has also played for Brazos Valley Junior Volleyball and would like to continue to play after high school.

“I’m thinking about playing on the Texas A&M University club team,” Pfeffer said. “It is such a big part of my life and would like to continue playing.”

Aside from volleyball Pfeffer is in the top 2% of her class, is involved in National Honor Society, and she also participates in a band.

“I play guitar in a praise band at my church,” Pfeffer said. “It is something that I do for fun, and I’ll always enjoy playing guitar.”

Pfeffer plans on attending A&M in the fall of 2014 to pursue a career in health care.

“I want to major in Allied Health at Texas A&M University and then become a pediatric oncologist,” Pfeffer said. “I just love being around kids and want to make them as comfortable as possible when they have a life threatening illness.”

Pfeffer is drawn to the excitement in volleyball and the friendships that are established along the way.

“Over the years I have really just enjoyed the thrill of playing the game,” Pfeffer said. “This year has been especially great thanks to my wonderful teammates and the support from other students.”
