Just for kicks : Senior soccer player enjoys success on field

The opposing team has the ball, and they're dribbling down the soccer field, getting ready to kick the ball into the net to score. Senior Yanni Vasilakis stands at the center-mid of the field and waits for the ball to be kicked towards him. There’s only a couple seconds left until the game is over and this kick determines the fate of whether or not the team will take home a win. The opposing team kicks a power shot towards the net but he strides towards the ball and kicks it towards the opposing team’s net, leading his team to another victory.

Whether the star of the little league team or the kid picking flowers in the outfield, it’s a rite of passage for American children to test the waters of sports. The obsession with sports doesn’t end in grades school, but instead continues even after teams become more selective at a collegiate level. As little league athletes transition to weekend fans, the popularity of sports in universities has continued to increase and coaches have started making millions of dollars based on the revenue generated by the players on the field. Coaches are over privileged and excessively paid for their players’ performance in numerous college sports while the athletes are strictly sanctioned by the NCAA.

Olympics heightens pride, builds ambition

When the Olympics come around, a majority of viewers only watch the events they care about and enjoy watching. For some, they watch a sport that they used to play or an intense game that gets their adrenaline pumping just by watching it. For others, they watch to feel in the loop while around the water cooler or at the lunch table. No matter what our reasons are for watching the Olympics, the Games always seem to bring about a heightened sense of nationalism, an interest in new sports, and a newly acquired passion for athletics.

You think back to all your hard work; everything you have done to prepare for this moment. You get a rush of adrenaline and suddenly, you get them down on the ground, trapping them on the mat. It’s all over, the referee raises your hand, signifying that you won.

Wrestling advances nine to region

The boys' wrestling team finished in second place with 154 point at the District 25 meet Saturday, Feb 4. The girls team finished fifth with 38 points. Nine Vikings qualified to move forward and compete at regional.

Mens Soccer wins first tournament
