Movies set to release in 2019 promise to thrill audiences

A new year brings new blockbusters to theaters. Some movie-goers are enthusiastic about these new films but others are skeptical about the quality of the movies 2019 has in store. This year will have a wide variety of genres, including superheroes, horror, and even childhood classics.

As for the superhero films, cinematic universes like Marvel and DC have a lot planned. Marvel has three movies set for 2019: Captain Marvel in March, Avengers Endgame in April, and Spiderman Far From Home in July. Considering the devastation that Avengers Infinity War had on fans, many are looking forward to the path that the directors (The Russo Brothers) will take in 2019. Avengers Infinity War was one of my favorite movies of 2018, and Avengers Endgame is the movie that I am most excited for. Marvel did something that no other company has done: not only have they made sequels, but they have built a universe around their films.

While Marvel has an ambitious plan ahead, DC has only two movies set for 2019, Shazam in April and Joker in October. Shazam is about a fourteen-year-old boy who can transform himself into the adult superhero, Shazam. Fans of the Batman saga experienced disappointment since DC tried to take a new path after the death of Heath Ledger, who played the Joker in The Dark Knight. In DC’s Suicide Squad, Jared Leto portrayed the Joker, and audiences will see yet another Joker, with actor Joaquin Phoenix. Having so many different actors portray the same character seems messy, which is why i’m not looking forward to the new movie.

Horror films are abundant in 2019, including a sequel to IT in September, Pet Sematary in April, Happy Death Day 2U in February, and more. Following the IT remake from 2017 will be IT: Chapter Two. Audiences responded well to the remake and critics rated it well, which left fans looking forward to the sequel. Pet Sematary is a remake of the 1989 film, Pet Sematary, which is about the discovery of a cemetery for animals who come back to life.

Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to Happy Death Day, is about a college student who is stuck in a time loop and must die repeatedly to save her friends from a murderer. It appears that many of the horror films of 2019 are sequels or remakes, which is a bit repetitive at this point, and gets a little old.

As for children’s movies in 2019, audiences have a lot to look forward to. Out of the six most anticipated children’s films of 2019, five are Disney movies. These include Dumbo in March, Aladdin in May, Toy Story 4 in June, The Lion King in July, and Frozen 2 in November. While some feel that Toy Story 4 is one of the most anticipated films of 2019, others think that Toy Story 3 ended well and another movie is unnecessary. Three of these five films are remakes, including Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King, which feels a bit unoriginal and seems to imply that Disney is simply running out of ideas.

The sixth children’s movie of 2019 is The Lego Movie 2, which is a Warner Brothers film. Since The Lego Movie in 2014, there have been other lego movies, like The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago movie both in 2017, but neither were rated as well as The Lego Movie, but the wholesome movies carry well with audiences of all ages with their elmer humor and nostalgia.

There will be several ups and downs in the film industry in the near future. In 2019, prepare to spend several nights with friends, family, and lots of popcorn!
