Super Mario movie 1-ups competition as classic video game crossover

Even though the Super Mario Bros franchise is one of the most well known video game series in the world, not everyone knows about the 1993 Super Mario Bros Movie, AKA, the greatest movie ever filmed. The acting, the plot, and movie scenes’ designs are all high quality.

Starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, the pair travel through an interdimensional portal that leads them to Dinohattan. They set off to rescue Daisy, who was kidnapped by Koopa’s henchmen and cousins, Iggy and Spike.

Throughout the adventure, Koopa informs Daisy that only she can merge the two worlds because of her royal heritage. By the end of the movie Mario, Luigi, and Toad, a musician who is transformed into a Goomba as punishment from Koopa, are successful in rescuing Daisy. Mario and Luigi then have to leave Daisy to reconnect with her father as they return to Brooklyn, but get reconnected when Daisy comes back for them later.

Overall, it’s a wonderful movie that everyone should take part in watching at some point in their lives. However, there is one slight issue with that – it is not available in the United States on any streaming services.

To be able to watch it, I had to order it on Amazon and wait almost a month for it to arrive after paying $10.77 (including shipping). It did get here earlier than Amazon said it would, so that was a plus.

I had high hopes for the movie and I was not let down. It was humorous and had an interesting story plot that was somewhat easy to follow along with for the most part. There were moments throughout where I had no idea what was happening, but it turned around and made sense again a few moments later.

I will be honest, for the first 20 minutes, I was unsure about what was going on. The movie started and I could understand what was happening, but as it went on I had no idea where they were or what time period all of it was taking place. Eventually though, I did catch on to what was happening and it was enjoyable.

My favorite character is introduced after Mario and Luigi lose sight of Daisy in the streets of Dinohattan. Toad is a guitarist who gets transformed by Koopa from his normal self to a goomba. He is the first to be strapped to the device and states that Koopa is an awful leader and the old king will return before being de-evolved.

You can always recognize Toad out of all of the Goombas by the harmonica attached to his head. Though he can’t talk, he helps Daisy escape and find Mario and Luigi. At the end of the movie when Mario and Koopa are fighting, Toad gives Luigi and Daisy devolution guns and distracts the other Goombas after Koopa ordered them to de-evolute Mario by playing his harmonica.

There was one scene where Toad catches on fire and I thought he was going to die, but he later magically appears alive and well. My favorite scene is the elevator scene where a group of Goombas are standing and then Luigi starts making one of them sway and the rest begin to do the same.

Basically, to live your life to the fullest, you must watch the Super Mario Bros Movie. It is not too hard to obtain and will leave you anticipating it for the few weeks before it arrives. You’ll also learn from the movie that Mario and Luigi’s full names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, which is just a cool trivia fact while being immersed in the Mario world.

It is a very memorable movie and will leave you wanting to watch it again, simply because of how amazing and well thought out it is. I recommend buying the movie if you can and mark it off your bucket list.
