MTV’s new series Awkward, is uncomfortable, but for the star of the show, Jenna Hamilton, this is a part of her everyday life at high school.
Jenna is a 15-year-old who goes unnoticed by her peers for most of her life, until she has an accident and receives a mysterious letter. The letter, written anonymously and signed by ‘a friend’, informs Jenna that she is in fact invisible and lists things Jenna should do to improve her social life. Later that night, Jenna experiences a series of unfortunate events that made it appear as though she attempted to kill herself. Jenna is then hospitalized for a broken arm, and becomes the subject of gossip.
After a few days, Jenna goes back to school. When she returns, she is noticed by everyone, but not in a good way. Finally in the limelight, Jenna decides to take full advantage of it. The letter encourages her to prove the anonymous writer wrong by showing that she isn’t invisible after all. She pushes herself further than she ever has before, gaining the attention of the entire school.
You’d think that any attention is good attention, but we all know that’s not the case. A simple rumor can ruin your reputation, or make you infamous among your classmates. As if struggling with having the attention on you isn’t enough, many of us struggle to be noticed, and fall through the cracks of the social circuit.
Jenna Hamilton and Awkward easily relates to everyday high school life. I enjoy watching Awkward because Jenna struggles with similar things I see my peers struggling with everyday. From her struggles to being noticed in school, to trying to please her parents, I think all of us can see a little Jenna in us, and we all strive to be better in our social and home life.
I give Awkward two thumbs up, and recommend anyone over the age of 15 to watch this show. You wont regret tuning it. Awkward comes on Tuesdays, 10 p.m.
