‘Marvel’ous movie makes millions at debut, showcases strong female lead

Marvel Studios has taken over the cinematic world over the past eleven years and continues to do so in 2019 with Captain Marvel.

Since Marvel’s first film, Iron Man in 2008, a whopping twenty-two movies have been released.

While some companies produce sequels to their films, Marvel has a different approach, by creating a universe. All twenty-two movies are based on comics co-written by Stan Lee who died this past year.

Out of all Marvel films, Captain Marvel is the first to have a female lead character, portrayed by Brie Larson.

When I first heard about this movie, I was ecstatic to see a woman take the stage for the first time.

The original Avengers only had one female hero, Black Widow. Non-male characters were still limited just before Captain Marvels release, with Scarlet Witch, Mantis, Valkyrie, and few others who only joined the team recently.

In the past decade, superhero movies in general have evolved from targeting men to a movie like Captain Marvel, which shows how far these companies have come.

Marvel celebrated International Women’s Day with the release of Captain Marvel on March 8.

Unlike most films with a female lead, or most movies even, Captain Marvel does not have a love interest as part of the story line. Other characters, such as Black Widow, are over sexualized and not taken as seriously as men.

One of my favorite things about Captain Marvel is how she is portrayed as such a powerful role model for young women. Throughout the movie, the audience witnesses her character develop and sees her figure out who she is as a person. Captain Marvel is the perfect example of what a superhero, and a woman, should strive to be.

The story took place in the mid 90’s, which made it feel distant from the rest of the storyline, ideal for her first standalone film.

It did amazing opening weekend, ranking number two in highest grossing Marvel movies, just behind Avengers: Infinity War.

The film also recently broke the one billion dollar record, and has a score of 78% on rotten tomatoes.

For most die-hard Marvel fans, Captain Marvel was a hit, but to the more generic audience, it had a lower rating.

One of the best things about Captain Marvel is that her intricate backstory is unique and refreshing. It also had the perfect balance of being easy to understand for those who haven’t seen all twenty-two original films, while also making references to previous films to true fans.

Its purpose is to introduce a new character and get fans excited for Avengers: Endgame, which it without a doubt did.

Avengers: Endgame is set to release on April 26, which is where we will see Captain Marvel next. In preparation for the fourth Avengers film, make sure you set aside some time to see Captain Marvel in theaters.
