The proverbial cliche about sports is that they are 90% mental, but how does that actually look in practice? Though sophomore golfer Luke Robertson has worked to improve his performance this season through physical practices, he has also focused on the mental and emotional aspects of the game to get an edge over his opponents on the course. Being cognizant about his reaction to each stroke and how the game is played from the first hole to the last has helped him grow as a golfer.

They look down the green with narrowed eyes to block out the sun’s glare. After adjusting the clubs in their hands, they mentally calculate the distance and the amount of force they must swing to get a tiny ball over 300 yards across a field while avoiding water hazards, sand traps, and trees while taking into account the wind. Becoming more confident, they swing, and the balls fly away through the air. For sophomore Skye Faldyn and senior Ellie Conrad, this has become natural.

The golf team hosted the first annual Maliska/Hicks Memorial Boys Varsity Tournament this year at the Texas A&M golf course. The tournament is named after former Viking players Garrett Maliska, who passed away in 2011 from Glioblastoma Cancer, and John Harden Hicks II, who passed away last November from Glioblastoma Brain Cancer.

Every teacher hopes to leave an impression on the students they teach. Coach Robin Colcchio has achieved that goal in his 16 years with Bryan ISD by not only fostering the minds of students in the classroom and abilities on the golf course, but by helping start the girl’s soccer program during the 1995-1996 school year.

For many Viking athletes, golf is a fun and engaging activity that also serves as a stress reliever.
Senior Matthew Wilkinson has been involved with the golf program since his freshman year.
“I have fun doing it,” Wilkinson said. “It’s something I enjoy.”
